Who dares to teach must never cease to learn
- John Cotton Dana
Just as learning is a lifelong journey, so too is teaching. I believe that students and teachers can learn, and grow together and learn from one another. Learning involves more than just an individual student or teacher, it includes parents, siblings, friends, the community, and many other individuals. I believe that classrooms are a place to become familiar with diversity and difference, they are a place to make students aware of just how unique and important they are.
Teaching is not about memorization or being told what is right or wrong. It is about teaching students the skills for success inside and outside of the classroom. Challenging students to apply this knowledge, to problem solve, and to collaborate with others are all important, but this does not mean that the same formula works for every individual. There are numerous pathways of learning and these need to be demonstrated within the classroom. I believe that teachers need to make learning applicable to their students, but most importantly they need to know their student. A classroom is a place to voice opinions, to challenge what we already know, and is a place for cultivation. I believe that teachers need to create a safe learning environment for their students. Effective classroom routines can help create a safe environment and with routines and expectations comes a safe, focused, and appreciative classroom. I believe that all students should be given the opportunity to not only recognize, but also achieve their full potential. It is my position as a teacher to make sure that all students are valued and that they are able to recognize their skills and achievements. This means getting to know more about my students, it means understanding their lives beyond the classroom, and working with them to ensure their success. I believe that teachers have a responsibility to help students succeed. I believe in giving second, third and even tenth chances because what we learn from these mistakes or struggles, the things that we really have to work hard at, are truly what shape us in who we become. |
