I hope to bring English Language Arts into all subject areas that I will teach. In particular, I will be looking for certain ELA qualities in my major subject area, science. I will be assessing students on their abilities to use the six different strands of Language Arts within a scientific context.

The Alberta Education ELA Program of Studies states that there are 5 General Outcomes to be covered in English Language Arts and should be assessed in all other subject areas, including science. It is the responsibility of all teachers in all subject areas to teach language. Of the 5 General Outcomes, the ones that I find most fitting are:

Identify patterns and order in objects and events studied; and record observations, using pictures, words and charts, with guidance in the construction of charts; and make predictions and generalizations, based on observations
Recognize the importance of accuracy in observation and measurement; and, with guidance, apply suitable methods to record, compile, interpret and evaluate observations and measurements.
