Practicum Goals
1. Become familiar with the Gr. 2 & Gr. 6 Social Studies curriculum
Rationel: Taking the opportunity of looking at the social studies programs to create lesson plans will help me for future lesson planning in my own class. This is where I can ask questions and learn from my mistakes along the way.
Strategies: I will look at the programs of studies, teacher resources, and the recommended student textbooks to collaborate and develop comprehensive lesson plans consisting of General Learning Outcomes and Specific Learning Outcomes. I will send copies of my lessons to my teacher assistant for constructive feedback and then reflect after performing my lessons. This will help me evaluate what went well during the lesson and what I can improve upon.
Indicators of Success: I will include a variety of student outcome and appropriate activities for the students to be engaged in during the lesson. These activities will be closely matched with formative assessments to check the students' learning.
2. Gain understanding of the Enchant community with its farming and Mennonite population
Rationel: Having an understanding of the community helps you as a teacher to understand who your students are and where they come from. You should learn to incorporate community’s values into your teaching strategies.
Strategies: Each day I will make an effort to get to know the students a little better than the day before. Asking questions about a little girl's dress, what kind of farm does he/ she live one, what kind of animals does their family have, reading the Enchant local paper, and participating in a community activity. These experiences will help me gain more understanding of the community and its values.
Indicators of Success: I will make a game of becoming more familiar with the students, finding something unique about each of them. Having conversations about farming and things that happen locally with the students will show that I have become more aware of the community and its values.
